Newcastle United hosts Hull City at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon for Premier League Matchday 5 ahead of a three-week international break.
Matthias Jaissle’s side enters the match following a 4-1 defeat at Leeds United, which ended Newcastle’s five-game unbeaten start to the season in all competitions in quite an abrupt way. The Magpies sit on five points from four league matches and 12th in the table.
In a concerning development, Newcastle has faced a league-high 76 shots through four games
and has kept only two clean sheets in its last 20 Premier League matches. The club is also winless in its three previous Premier League home meetings with Hull, drawing once and losing twice.
Jaissle has several absences to manage. Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey are unavailable, while Nico Gonzalez will miss the match with a concussion. Amar Dedic, Dan Burn, Ewen Jaouen, Joelinton and William Osula also remain sidelined. Bazoumana Toure could make his first Premier League start after scoring against Leeds.
Hull enters the matchup unbeaten following two wins and two draws. The promoted side sits fourth with eight points after victories over Manchester United and Coventry City and draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea. Sergej Jakirovic’s side most recently drew 2-2 at Chelsea after leading by two goals.
Hull will be without several players, including Ilyas Ansah, Jack Butland, Charlie Hughes and Hidemasa Morita, while Nobel Mendy is unavailable after suffering a head injury against Chelsea.

On Elanga’s injury…
“No real update on Anthony. I’ve spoken with him now, he is heading for an MRI scan. We will get more clarity after that, and hope it’s not too serious.
“It is sad after the great start he had. He is a key strength in our squad and we want to stay positive.”
On bouncing back after losing at Leeds…
“It is really important to show the right reaction after the Leeds United match. We are fully aligned and fully committed to show a reaction in front of our fans.
“It would be nice to finish this block of fixtures before the international break with a good result.”
On the newly-promoted Tigers, who have yet to lose in the Premier League in 2026/27…
“Hull are doing a great job, they have a clear identity. They know exactly what they are doing and what their strengths are and how to execute them on the pitch.
“We need to take their strengths away and use their weaknesses to get a good result.”
On other team news ahead of this weekend’s game…
“(We have) no new players coming back for the Hull game. We have some injured players missing, but we use that as an opportunity for others.
“Anthony (Elanga) and Amar (Dedić) will not be able to play on Saturday. JJ (Jacob Ramsey) is injured. Hopefully after the international break our injury list is shorter.”
On returning to St. James’ Park…
“I am really optimistic with our fans, they have a good feeling and sense of the challenges we have. They are supporting us.
“We are happy we are back home in front of them on the weekend.”
