The Yankees held serve last night, winning the first game of the year’s final series while the Blue Jays did the same. Over the final two days, New York needs to win one more game than Toronto, and while they’re
trying to accomplish that task, their starter today is sub rosa auditioning for a potential Wild Card start.
Cam Schlittler would line up well for a potential Thursday Game 3 start, even if the club hasn’t announced anything yet. We all know how much talent he’s shown, a three-win pitcher with a very live fastball. He handled the Orioles well last week, going 5.1 innings and allowing a single run with a 6:1 K:BB ratio.
Sugano, meanwhile, was kicked around by the Yankees last Saturday, giving up four runs in just three innings of work. You never want any one guy to be blown away, but unfortunately the Yankees need to win today and that means that I hope he does not last awfully long in this one. We are in the cutthroat part of the season, the division has to take precedence. Then again, it often happens in situations like this that the weaker team pulls off something special. That’s why we play the game.
With the chase for the division still on, there are no real days off in the starting lineup, especially against a righty. Ben Rice is behind the dish, with Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge left to right in the outfield as usual. Ryan McMahon and Anthony Volpe once again make up the left side of the infield.
