On October 17, 1982, the Brewers beat the Cardinals at old County Stadium by a score of 6-4, taking a 3-2 lead in the World Series and moving one win away from the franchise’s first championship and the city’s first since the 1957 Milwaukee Braves beat the dynasty Yankees to win it all. The Fall Classic shifted to Missouri, St. Louis won Game 6 in a blowout of Don Sutton, and the Cards then won Game 7 on big hits from Keith Hernandez, George Hendrick, and Darrell Porter.
That was the closest the Brewers
have ever come to a championship … until today. They have a shot to sweep the Rays and end the 2026 Fall Classic right now. Maybe the Rays have a 2024 Yankees Game 4 in them to keep the series alive, but with one of the more dominant postseason performances this decade, it’s all Brewers right now. Perhaps tonight’s the night at last for Wisconsin.
Today on the site, Peter will recap the blowout in World Series Game 3, Jonathan will review the wreckage of Amed Rosario’s 2026 season, and Kevin will celebrate the 150th birthday of one of the first Yankees/Red Sox standouts (or should we say Highlanders/Americans). Later, Josh will argue against check swing replays and the dogged pursuit of perceived perfection, and Michael will name his 2026 All-Yankees Prospect Team.
