After a long wait it’s finally here, the 2026 World Cup kicks off today! For the next month the beautiful game will take center stage as 48 nations will play across three different countries hoping to be crowned World Champions. Mexico, one of the co-hosts, will kick off the tournament against South Africa in Mexico City.
Mexico is led by Javier ‘Vasco’ Aguirre who is in his third tenure as National Team Head Coach. Just a few months ago Aguirre and the National Team had received harsh critiques after
the way they ended 2025. The first half of the year ended spectacularly with two trophies and then the second half was nothing but stagnation which caused worry among Mexican fans and media. Then the New Year began and so did a new National Team. While some faces remained the same, there was new blood in the mix and that rejuvenated the team and has made fans hopeful yet again. Youngsters such as Mateo Chavez, Obed Vargas, Guillermo Martinez, Armando Gonzalez and Brian Gutierrez all impressed Aguirre within a matter of months to secure their role in the World Cup. On top of that players like Gilberto Mora, Alvaro Fidalgo, Santiago Gimenez, Julian Quiñones, Raul Rangel, Carlos Acevedo, Israel Reyes, Erik Lira and Cesar Huerta also secured their spots in a World Cup for the first time. 14 newcomers and 12 veterans shaped up the roster for Mexico, making this a balanced roster that looks towards their veterans for guidance but takes a risk with the youngsters.
With a mix of players like this, Aguirre has a plethora of lineups to choose from. He can choose all veterans, take a huge gamble with the newcomers or have a mix and that is where some Mexican fans grow anxious. There’s a ‘hopeful’ lineup and then there’s a ‘realistic’ lineup that Aguirre has been toying with for months now.
Here’s the ‘realistic’ lineup: Ochoa; Gallardo, Vasquez, Montes, Sanchez; Alvarez, Gutierrez, Mora, Vega, Alvarado; Jimenez;
Here’s the ‘hopeful’ lineup: Rangel; Gallardo, Vasquez, Montes, Reyes; Lira, Gutierrez, Fidalgo, Mora; Jimenez, Quiñones;
The second lineup is only a few changes but it’s the one that can get them the results they need and make them look like a big threat. Unfortunately, Aguirre has already chosen the players he wants as his past lineups have shown what way he will lean once the World Cup starts. It’s not saying that those veterans can’t get the job done but Mexico needs to go with the best players in those positions and the second lineup can do that.
So what do you think Mexico fans, what lineup will Javier Aguirre choose? What lineup do you want to see Mexico have for their opening game against South Africa and the entire tournament?
Enjoy the World Cup Mexico fans!
