The necessity for a world-class number nine at Barcelona is becoming hard to ignore as the club looks toward next season. And inside the offices at the Ciutat Esportiva, one specific name has taken over the conversation: Julián Alvarez.
And it’s not just the name, it’s accompanied by a specific phrase. According to Diario SPORT, the sentiment among the leadership is clear: “Julián is the signing, yes or yes.” That’s right, his signing is not optional.
It is an ambitious stance considering the financial
hurdles involved, but the club appears unwilling to throw in the towel on the Argentine attacker just yet.
According to the show La Posesión, the Catalans see a perfect fit for Álvarez in Hansi Flick’s setup. At 26, his versatility allows him to lead the line as a striker, drop deep as a false nine, or even operate as a playmaker behind the center-forward. His ability to create numerical advantages in the middle of the pitch (a skill set developed during his earlier days as a midfielder) makes him a rare profile. Beyond his ability to link up, he offers an inexhaustible engine and free-kick taking, which Barcelona suffered directly in the UEFA Champions League.
But such a deal won’t come easy.
Atlético Madrid are reportedly holding out for a minimum of 120 million euros, though Mundo Deportivo notes that Barça is hoping to set a cap around 100 million. For Barcelona, this presents that familiar, grueling puzzle of wage caps and the 1:1 rule. Success depends almost entirely on the club’s ability to finalize major sales this summer, especially since Robert Lewandowski is entering his final stretch at 37 and drawing interest from the MLS and Italy.
If the Pole leaves, the squad is left thin, with Ferran Torres as the only other realistic option for the striker position. The distance between the two clubs over a deal remains significant. That is why the player’s own stance has become the pivot point for the entire operation. Reports indicate that Barça is betting on Álvarez to take the first step by internally communicating his desire to move to the Catalan capital.
While Atlético is aware that the man from Calchín might welcome a change of scenery, they will expect a monster offer to pry him from their hands. They have no urgent need to sell and have reportedly rejected the idea of including players in exchange to lower the price tag.
Álvarez himself has been somewhat cryptic about his future. When asked about Barcelona’s interest back in March, he noted that he was happy but admitted, “It may be that I continue, it may be that I don’t, you never know.”

His frustration with Atlético’s lack of silverware and certain tactical decisions by Diego Simeone has not gone unnoticed. Barça presents a more ambitious project, and reportedly, Álvarez prefers the move to Spain over offers from Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain. He isn’t keen on a Premier League return and feels little pull to the French league.
Barcelona want it. “The Spider” wants it. But they’re going to have to do a lot to make the move come true. Atlético are willing to sell star players to Barça, but only for the right price.
