Vincent Kompany’s collapse and Joshua Kimmich’s familial tragedy hit Bayern Munich hard during a difficult week of football. What is most important, of course, is that the duo and their families and friends recover and recuperate from these traumatic experiences. But it impacted Bayern’s players and staff, too.
With a lot of players also succumbing to injuries, the team was either going to falter due to the adversity or use that adversity to give themselves motivation. The Bavarians’ mostly convincing
3-1 away victory against high-flying SC Freiburg demonstrated the team had done the latter, and starting goalkeeper Jonas Urbig confirmed as much in the post-match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
“Today we played for the coach and for Joshua Kimmich. I hope we made him [Kompany] proud, even though I prefer that he would rest.”
Somehow, it is difficult to imagine Kompany refusing to watch the match, even in the hospital. Whether he has seen it already or will do so once he gets better, one can assume braving such adversity to demonstrate such a performance would be something for a coach to be quite proud of.
