Newcastle United’s academy pipeline has produced one of the club’s most important young first-team players in recent years, and another familiar family name is now moving forward.
Mason Miley, the younger brother of Lewis Miley, has signed his first professional contract with Newcastle.
The 17-year-old midfielder has come through the academy at his boyhood club, following older brothers
Lewis and Jamie through the same system.
“Lewis and Jamie have been through it and are both in the professional game,” Mason Miley told Newcastle’s official website. “Lewis is in Newcastle’s first team, so hopefully I can follow in his footsteps in the future.”
Miley also made clear what his long-term target is.
“To play with Lewis in a Newcastle United shirt for the first team is one of my ultimate goals,” Miley said.
Lewis is expected to have a larger first-team role next season once he returns from a broken leg, with Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham leaving the No. 6 role open.
Unlike Lewis, who is viewed as a more technical midfielder, Mason is described as a workhorse a la Joelinton, without the Hulkian body. He can also play at right back, adding to his value within the academy setup and potential versatility once/if he reaches the first team.
Mason is still in the early stages of his own development. That said, he’s precocious as they come, as he played for Newcastle’s under-18s as a 15-year-old and broke into the under-21s last season.
