Given the champion Roman Reigns’ schedule between now and Money in the Bank on Oct. 10, it looks like LA Knight will be the one selling their World Heavyweight title match match on WWE Raw.
That was the case last night (Sept. 21) when the red brand stopped in San Antonio. The #1 contender cut a different sort of promo on Reigns, one that emphasized Roman’s recent trend of defending his title with help from his associates in The Bloodline. It also told the story of Knight’s past shots at one of WWE’s
big prizes, and how he’s never been able to take home a World championship. It was also a different sort of promo from LA, who expressed some doubt before vowing to make the OTC acknowledge him in New Orleans next month.
It’s not included in the above, but there was also a moment where Knight stared into the camera for several seconds without saying anything mid-line. Many have assumed that to be the latest instance of LA forgetting his lines during one of the promos he told Chris Van Vliet are just him riffing on the creative team’s bullet points. The challenger also received a smattering of jeers from the crowd during his fiery babyface speech.
Those are talking points about the promo, but they’re part of larger debate about its quality — and by extension Money in the Bank’s World Heavyweight championship match, and even LA Knight’s status in the company.
Poking around the wrestle web, I’ve seen the kind of polarizing reactions WWE seems to love these days. Some fans are proclaiming it “fire” and another classic from Knight, specifically praising his uncharacteristic vulnerablity. Others said it a dud or boring, and are calling it evidence of why LA has never won one of WWE’s top titles. A third group blame the lack of suspense about the outcome of MitB’s WHC match, or Reigns’ schedule, or Roman in general. There were also those claiming that both LA and Solo Sikoa have been cooled off by how hard Raw’s pushing Royce Keys and his new 946 group.
Me? It wasn’t his best, but I’m not worried about Knight on the microphone. If he can work with Roman in NOLA to deliver a match worthy of the other World title matches we’ve been treated to in the past few months? Then I’ll be on-board for more LA Knight title shots and even a run with WWE’s top belts.
