The second part of the Apertura tournament has kicked off this week and while the table is getting tighter, we have an unforeseen underdog among the top eight teams and goalscorers who are making a difference for their clubs.
We need to talk about Atlético de San Luis
We are used to seeing Atlético de San Luis at the bottom of the table every tournament. The owners don’t care much about their women’s team and since Spaniards Bea Parra and Marta Perarnau left, the team has spiraled down.
However, this season they’re looking different and they’re translating
that onto the field. After two difficult matches at the beginning of the season, they got mixed results until week 5, when they bested Querétaro. In the following weeks, they beat Tijuana, Necaxa, and Puebla.
And even though they couldn’t get the three points against Atlas, they extended their unbeaten streak to five games after getting a draw.
Week 10 will show what this team is made of when they face Club América – the leader of the tournament, on Sunday.
América faces someone of its own size
After Toluca’s loss in week 8, only one team remained unbeaten and that was Club América. However, they had a tough match in week 9 against the reigning champions, Pachuca.
Tuzas scored two goals in three minutes from a brace scored by Myra Delgadillo, and before the 20th minute, América put themselves in a tough position. The visitors had to wait until the 51st minute to pull one back, but then Pachuca’s Charlyn Corral scored a great goal and América couldn’t find the equalizer, although they scored consolation goal one minute later.
With the Eagles losing their unbeaten streak, Tigres still holds the record for the longest unbeaten streak registered in Clausura 2022, which was an incredible, 17 matches.
It is important to highlight, though, that despite the loss, América continues at the top of the table, although Tigres is following closely, only two points shy.
Top goal scorers
Not only is the table getting tighter and tighter but also the Golden Boot race is as well. The top five is composed of Pachuca’s Charlyn Corral and Cruz Azul’s Aerial Chavarin, who both have 10 goals, while Club América’s Montse Saldivar has 9 goals and Toluca’s Eugénie Le Sommer and Tigres’ Jennifer Hermoso both have 8 goals.
As the Golden Boot race gets tighter and tighter, who will take home the title?
Will it be other than Corral, the reigning Golden Boot? Or will she win it once again, for a fourth time in a row?
What will week 10 bring?
Undoubtedly, the biggest game in week 10 will be the Clásico Regio. Although there will be big absences, such as Jacqui Ovalle and Rebeca Bernal, both teams have the responsibility to keep this rivalry alive and well.
Coming to this game, Tigres might have the upper hand. Not only do they sit second in the table but they also have shown a better level than Rayadas, who look a little lost this season. The Amazonians have made big signings and they’re paying off, while Rayadas’ roster might not be as strong as Tigres’.
However, no matter how both teams are doing so far in the tournament, we hope this clash will be one of a kind.
