It was early Friday and Bayern Munich had yet to receive a response from UEFA regarding the three game ban given to Luis Diaz following his red card vs PSG (via Sport1). This came after UEFA took an unusually
long time to decide how long Diaz would be suspended for in the first place.
The Colombian already sat out the game against Arsenal — a game Bayern ended up losing 3-1. The team’s next Champions League game is on Tuesday, and if no response had come by then, Diaz will have to serve a minimum of two games banned.
Per Sport1, impatience was growing in Munich over the delay. UEFA had already taken over two weeks to issue the notice of a three game ban, after which FC Bayern had to wait for the written justification to be made available in order to lodge an official appeal. Two more weeks passed since then, and it was still radio silence from UEFA.
This was an extremely frustrating situation for all those involved, and there will certainly be accusations (from fans, not the club) of foul play. After all, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is a member of the UEFA executive committee.
Of course, it was unlikely to be a genuine conspiracy against FC Bayern. Instead, it was probably a case of UEFA being grossly incompetent as always. If they delayed it long enough, Diaz could have had to serve the entire three game ban without ever getting his appeal heard. Wow, what a great system!
As we know, though, UEFA finally figured it out and reduced the ban to two games, but fans still were left wondering why it all took so long?
What do you think?
