It is an interesting idea and also one that sits right at the intersection of squad depth, playing style, and financial practicality.
On paper, Füllkrug makes a lot of sense. He’s a traditional No. 9, physically strong, excellent in the air, and proven at both the Bundesliga and international level. Bayern Munich’s system often relies on a focal point striker, and Füllkrug offers a like-for-like alternative to Kane in terms of presence in the box. That matters more than it might seem: when Kane doesn’t
play, Bayern Munich’s attack can sometimes lose its structure, drifting into a more fluid but less decisive setup.
There’s also the depth argument. Bayern Munich is competing on multiple fronts every season — Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League — and relying almost exclusively on Kane is a risk. An injury or even just fatigue late in the season could become a major issue. Füllkrug is experienced enough to step in without a massive drop-off in quality, which is exactly what you want from a backup striker.
That said, there are real concerns. Füllkrug is not a young, developmental player. Would he accept a rotational role behind one of the most durable and high-minute forwards in world football? Kane rarely comes off the pitch, which limits opportunities for any backup.
There is also the stylistic question. Bayern Munich has been trending toward more dynamic, interchangeable attacking players — think wide forwards and attacking midfielders who rotate positions. Füllkrug is more of a classic, stationary striker. That’s useful in certain matches, but it could feel like a tactical step backward in others.
Financially, Bayern would also need to weigh whether investing in a backup No. 9 is the best use of resources. There may be more pressing needs in defense or midfield depth.
Ultimately, the move would provide security and experience, but only if Füllkrug is willing to embrace a limited role. Otherwise, Bayern Munich might be better off targeting a younger, more flexible option.
What do you think — proven veteran insurance, or unnecessary luxury?
