A report Wednesday indicated that John Cena vs. Gunther would open Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend. It was one that left a lot of the wrestling world scratching their heads. Why would WWE put
Cena’s retirement match on first, making Cody Rhodes, Bayley, and others to follow a historic moment that’s sure to be emotional? Would any fans keep their screens on Peacock after Cena said goodbye?
Yesterday, there was backtracking on the report. Today (Dec. 12), Cena visited The Pat McAfee Show and shoveled dirt on it. The Never Seen 17 compared to a QAnon-related conspiracy theory about a Washington, D.C. pizzeria and essentially called it clickbait without using the word (or even condemning the practice, really).
McAfee tees it up by saying he heard Cena’s going first. He replied:
“That is Pizzagate, homie… I was on Jimmy Kimmel, I said I’m ending the show. I said, ‘I normally go to bed early, but I’m gonna to have to stay up late for this one.’ I guess people didn’t read between the tea leaves, like, we’re last…
“I don’t know how the rumor started. I think there’s — some folks with credibility like to kick a hornet’s nest every once in a while and get people chattering. I understand, we’re in the age of information, so what’s gonna keep my attention. ‘You’re not last?’ Sure, that’ll keep my attention for a few hot clicks. I don’t even know how that started. It’s difficult to conceptualize that. Again, I don’t make the menu, and gosh — if I show up tomorrow and they want me to go on first, that’s what I’m gonna do.
”But we are last at this moment.“
There you have it. Celebrate and/or dunk on the dirt sheets* below.
