Good morning, New York Giants fans! Here are the stories you need to as the Giants are on a bye this week.

For his part, McCarthy did what the Giants’ coaches were hoping he’d do on Sunday. He managed the operation of the offense cleanly, led the group with confidence and stayed within the game plan. Head coach John Harbaugh pointed out after the game that there were no procedural penalties with the offense, remarkable considering how new to it the starting quarterback was. Harbaugh also used the word
“joy” multiple times to describe the feeling around the Giants right now, and he practically bounced out of his postgame news conference when it was done.
Look, it’s only one game (and one quarter the week before against the Saints), and it’s far too soon to fully trust what this team can be with McCarthy leading it. But they’ve clearly come together as a group in Harbaugh’s first year. They’re identifying their leaders — Abdul Carter gave the fiery halftime speech that asked his teammates to leave everything out on the field in the second half — and drawing top-level performances out of players at every level of the roster. Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson put cornerback Deonte Banks on star Texans receiver Nico Collins for large parts of the game Sunday, and Banks shut Collins down.

J.J. McCarthy had five completions of at least 20 yards in Week 7, tied for the most in a game in his career (he also had five in Week 6 when he played only the final 11 minutes). McCarthy’s 10 completions of at least 20 yards this season are the second-most in the NFL since Week 6 behind only Caleb Williams (11).
Isaiah Likely has 41 catches, one shy of his career high with Baltimore in 2024. He is the third tight end in NFL history to surpass 40 receptions in his first seven games with a team (Brock Bowers and Keith Jackson are the others). Likely is on pace for 100 catches, which has happened just three times in franchise history at any position. It would shatter Jeremy Shockey’s franchise record of 74 catches for tight ends, which has stood since 2002. Mark Bavaro is the only Giants tight end to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards, doing so in 1986 with 1,001.

19. J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy played much better than expected in his first start for the Giants, going toe to toe with C.J. Stroud by firing a collection of precise passes to the likes of Malik Nabers and Malachi Fields. It helped that the Giants ran for 188 yards, but we shouldn’t discount McCarthy’s performance. Now he’ll have to do it consistently in order to truly repair his reputation.

Winning didn’t just help the Giants’ record in the standings, either. It emboldened them. It reinforced their confidence that they can make some special of this season.
“I think there’s so many guys that are hungry to win here,” said fullback Pat Ricard. “They just want to win, and they want to prove themselves, and they want to be Pro Bowlers. They want to be All-Pros. They want to be paid. And they want to win. And I feel like Harbaugh challenges everybody here and keeps you accountable so that you are focused and you’re detailed, and you put the team above yourself. And we’re all working together. I feel like you’ve seen that all year: How resilient we’ve been, and just sticking in every game, and just keep believing, and keep trying to win,” he added. “And I feel like we’ve done that.”

“Very quiet and he mentioned many times that his goal was to make it uncomfortable, so I think he succeeded in that,” said left guard Jon Runyan Jr. “It wasn’t necessarily coming from a point of trying to bring people down, but more so as looking through the lens of looking at what’s going on in our division right now and the opportunity we have to create separation every week.”

17. New York Giants (no change). The Giants’ offensive line was solid this week, but given the defensive line it went up against in the win over the Houston Texans, that in itself is a big achievement. This was the best we’ve seen from rookie right guard Francis Mauigoa, with the first-round draft pick compiling an 87.8 PFF pass-blocking grade and giving up no pressures from 32 pass-blocking snaps.
Why Giants still aren’t favored to win NFC East despite leading division at 4-2-1 | The Athletic
The situation at quarterback is the main source of the market’s resistance. After losing Dart in Week 2, backup Jameis Winston started the next four games before the Giants handed the reins to J.J. McCarthy against Houston. The third-year QB was acquired in a midseason trade with Minnesota, which drafted him 10th overall out of Michigan, where he won a national championship with Harbaugh’s brother, Jim, as the head coach.
Another part of the equation is a weak division. The Cowboys sit in second place with two more losses, including one head-to-head to the Giants, and have a defense that ranks in the bottom third in several categories. The 2-5 Philadelphia Eagles have lost five straight games and Jalen Hurts is out for the season, while the Washington Commanders are 1-4-1.
