Not every NFL Draft pick follows the same route. Some are five-star recruits destined for the league from the moment they leave high school. Parker Hughes’ journey couldn’t have been more different.
The former Middle Tennessee State linebacker had to battle uncertainty, setbacks and even thoughts of giving up football altogether before hearing his name called by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Along the way, he quietly built one of the most remarkable stories in college football.

He was ready to walk away from football for good
Parker Hughes came dangerously close to never becoming an NFL player.
After beginning his college career at Middle Tennessee, Hughes transferred to Samford in search of a fresh start. Instead, he found himself in a scheme that simply didn’t suit him. The Bulldogs wanted him to play as a stand-up edge defender, a role he never truly felt comfortable in, and football quickly stopped being fun.
When he decided to leave Samford, another transfer wasn’t even part of the plan.
In Hughes’ own words, he intended to quit football altogether.
That changed when former Middle Tennessee assistants Dustin Royston and Scott Shafer reached out and invited him back to Murfreesboro. There was no guarantee of playing time, no scholarship waiting for him and no promises about the future. Hughes returned as a walk-on simply because he wanted to be part of the program again.
“I literally just want to be here,” Hughes said at the time. “It doesn’t even matter if I play.”
It’s an astonishing quote when you consider what happened next. The player who almost walked away from the sport became the heartbeat of the Blue Raiders’ defense, recording over 100 tackles in his final season before completing one of college football’s most unlikely journeys to the NFL.
He was recruited as an offensive star, not a linebacker
If you only watched Hughes at Middle Tennessee, you’d assume he’d always been a linebacker.
The reality couldn’t be more different.
At Elizabethton High School in Tennessee, Hughes was one of the state’s most explosive offensive weapons. During his senior season alone, he caught 62 passes for 1,326 yards, rushed for another 539 yards and scored an astonishing 28 total touchdowns. As if that wasn’t enough, he also intercepted six passes while playing in the secondary.
He finished his high school career with more than 4,200 all-purpose yards, starring at receiver, running back, defensive back and as a return specialist.
Most colleges looked at those numbers and saw an offensive playmaker.
Middle Tennessee saw something else entirely.
The Blue Raiders believed Hughes’ instincts, toughness and football IQ would translate better on the defensive side of the ball, making them one of the few programs to recruit him primarily as a linebacker.
That decision proved inspired. Rather than becoming another athlete trying to find touches on offense, Hughes developed into one of Conference USA’s most productive tacklers and eventually an NFL Draft selection.
Sometimes the best talent evaluations aren’t about seeing what a player is—they’re about recognising what they could become.
He achieved something even Jason Witten never did
Elizabethton High School has produced its fair share of football talent.
Its most famous graduate is undoubtedly future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Witten, whose legendary NFL career made him one of the school’s greatest-ever athletes.
Yet Hughes managed something that even Witten never accomplished.
He became the first player from Elizabethton to win the prestigious Tennessee Titans Mr. Football award.
For Hughes, that honour carried enormous significance. Growing up in a town that had already produced NFL stars, setting a brand-new benchmark for his school meant more than the individual trophy itself. It represented years of hard work and showed younger athletes from Elizabethton that they could continue raising the standard.
It’s easy to overlook awards won in high school once an NFL career begins, but this one remains a defining moment in Hughes’ journey.
Being mentioned alongside Jason Witten is impressive.
Creating a piece of school history that even Witten never achieved is something altogether different.
His return to MTSU wasn’t nearly as straightforward as it sounds
Returning to Middle Tennessee should have been the easy part.
Instead, Hughes found himself caught in an NCAA eligibility process that delayed his comeback and left him waiting on the sidelines while paperwork was resolved.
After transferring back from Samford, he wasn’t immediately cleared to play, forcing him to watch the opening weeks of the season while the situation played out.
For many players, that sort of delay would have been frustrating enough to derail their momentum.
Hughes responded differently.
When he finally became eligible, he wasted absolutely no time announcing that he was back.
In his first career start for the Blue Raiders, Hughes recorded five tackles, a sack and blocked a punt in a performance that showcased exactly why the coaching staff had fought to bring him back.
From there, his role only continued to grow. The linebacker who had once wondered whether he’d ever play football again quickly established himself as one of the leaders of Middle Tennessee’s defense.

He quietly became one of college football’s cleanest defenders
There’s a statistic that rarely makes headlines but means everything to coaches.
Penalties.
Over the course of almost 2,000 defensive snaps in college football, Parker Hughes was flagged just once.

A linebacker is constantly involved in collisions, tackles, blitzes and coverage responsibilities, yet Hughes played with remarkable discipline throughout his career. There were no costly late hits, no repeated personal fouls and very few mental mistakes.
