I’ll be honest, the dread was starting to loom as I kept track of Marquette men’s soccer via live stats on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles outshot Saint Mary’s 6-3 in the first half, but they had no goals to show for their effort and went into the break in a scoreless tie with the Gaels. That’s mostly fine, bordering on good after MU managed just five shots in 90 minutes against Oakland in their 2026 season opener. But as the second half wore on and Marquette wasn’t getting any shots off, and Saint Mary’s was stacking
up four unanswered attempts, three that had to be swallowed up by keeper Cameron Simpson…. well, you see why there was looming dread.
Then, in the 69th minute, Tomiwa Adewumi was in the right place at the right time for his second goal in as many matches as a collegiate player.
Am I crazy or did he chest that goal into the net? It looks like that, right? Clearly it wasn’t a handball or anything, as you don’t see the SMC players deeply protesting the play, but it also doesn’t look like Adewumi gets a leg up to boot it in, either.
It’s not surprising that the field slightly tilted after that, seeing as SMC was left with 20 minutes to try to find an equalizer. Somewhat justifiably, Marquette didn’t need to push too hard to generate offense as they didn’t want to get caught on a counter, and SMC recorded three of the next four shots of the match, and they fit a corner kick in there, too.
But when Marquette got a chance to advance it safely, they did, and that’s how the Golden Eagles earned a penalty kick in the 87th minute when Drew Mullins got sent to the turf by a defender. That led to this insurance penalty kick from Mads Konrad Horgoien:
Not much that Saint Mary’s could do about a 2-0 deficit with just under four minutes left, and that’s how Marquette moves to 1-0-1 on the year.
It does make you wonder what could have happened in this match if VAR didn’t wipe away a Gabe Watkins goal in the 7th minute, though.
Shouts to Cameron Simpson, who snared four SMC shots in this match to earn his first shutout of the season and keep the Golden Eagles undefeated after two contests.

Up Next: After two home contests to start the year, Marquette will hit the road as the student body starts moving back to campus for the start of the fall semester this week. The Golden Eagles will venture down to DeKalb, Illinois, on Thursday, August 27th, for a 7pm Central time start against Northern Illinois. The Huskies are 1-1-0 after beating Butler 2-0 and losing to Loyola Chicago 3-1. Thursday’s match will be their home opener.
