49ers QB Brock Purdy’s status headlines team’s latest update on injured players “The 49ers will not open the practice window for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, Shanahan said. Aiyuk’s status for the season
remains unclear after sustaining an ACL tear in his right knee on Oct. 20, 2024. He remains on the reserve/PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list.
Second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who has missed five games, could see a return to the practice field this week. He sustained a posterior-cruciate injury in his right knee in the 49ers’ Sept. 28 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He led the team in receiving at the time of the injury. Pearsall has 20 catches for 327 yards in four games this season.
The 49ers believe there is a chance center Jake Brendel can be back on the practice field this week after he missed two games with a hamstring injury.
Guard Ben Bartch made progress last week from a knee injury. He remains on injured reserve after starting the first two games of the season.“
What happens after you get traded? NFL players explain, in their own words (paywall)
“Trent Williams: “I was getting ready to go to Minnesota. It wasn’t my ideal place, but I was cool with it. I mean, I like Kirk (Cousins). Kirk’s one of my friends and I was ready to do it. And then when I saw the compensation and it was like two fifth-rounders, I’m like, ‘Oh well, that’s not a steep price.’
“So I said to (49ers coach) Kyle (Shanahan), ‘Hey man, I’m finna go to Minnesota. What’s up?’ I forget exactly how I put it. And he was like, ‘No, man, no. The asking price (Washington) wants is too high. It’s astronomical. They’re gonna want a couple of first-rounders.’ I said, ‘No, I’m literally finna get traded for two fifth-round picks.’ And he was like, ‘What?’ Then he got in the mix and then the Rams got in the mix, and, obviously, I’ve known (Rams coach) Sean McVay just as long as I’ve known Kyle.
“(The Rams) asked me to play left guard because they had Andrew Whitworth. It was his (next-to-last) year and it would have been a tough conversation to have (with him). … So I’m like, ‘I’m not playing left guard. Not right now.’ I could see it a couple of years at the end, but not (then).
“So I kind of zeroed in on the 49ers and we made it work. (The Rams) came back and was like, ‘No, we’re going to let you play left tackle.’ Whitworth contacted me himself and said he’d love to play with me. But at that point, it was kind of a little too far — I’d already taken my mind off of them and I was doing whatever I could to get to San Francisco.”
49ers vs. Giants PFF grades: Best and worst from the game, plus snap counts
“Dominick Puni was the game’s highest-graded offensive lineman (89.4). Right tackle Colton McKivitz earned the top run-blocking grade (93.0), while left tackle Trent Williams posted the best pass-blocking grade (88.5). However, McKivitz allowed a team-high three pressures and a sack.
Left guard Spencer Burford was San Francisco’s lowest-graded offensive lineman (55.8), earning a 59.4 run-blocking grade and a 36.9 pass-blocking grade—both the lowest among the group. He also surrendered a sack.“
Giants ‘embarrassed’ by 49ers fans’ MetLife Stadium takeover
“Putting out the performance we had as a team, seeing the San Fran fans all packing the stadium, I felt embarrassed leaving the field,” Runyan said. “And that’s not really a feeling you want to have leaving your own home stadium.”
There was a “C-M-C!” chant for Christian McCaffrey — enough noise in a key moment that even with a silent snap count, Runyan’s offensive line mates (John Michael Schmitz Jr. and Marcus Mbow) committed back-to-back false starts — and mostly red jerseys in the stands at the end.
Giants-49ers ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’: A loss that looked all too familiar
Wet Willies to …
Brian Daboll — Yes, the Giants were under-manned. That isn’t an excuse for a team being lifeless, having the same issues week after week, for running a simplistic, unimaginative game plan that looked like the Daniel Jones stick route offense and the first game of the preseason on defense. Oh, and what is with running Dart over and and over and over two weeks in a row in games that were hopelessly out of hand. The job is to develop him, not kill him.
The Giants are now 11-32 over the last 2½ years with Daboll at the helm. Injury-riddled at this point or not, it is a team that should be better than 2-7.
One more thing: All I could think of when the score was 20-7 in the third quarter, the Giants had fourth-and-goal at the 3-yard line, and Daboll chose to kick the field goal rather than play for the touchdown was Joe Judge at the end of his tenure coaching to keep scores respectable rather than actually trying to win games.
Run defense — Pitiful. The 49ers watched the Broncos and the Eagles run wild by running to the edge against the Giants’ defense the last couple of weeks, and did the same. San Francisco ran for 159 yards, and their dominance on the ground is not reflected by their 4.1 yards per carry average.
Giants’ players talked about execution and players doing what they are supposed to do after the game. Sadly, that was the same babble we have begun to hear week after week. Except the execution doesn’t get better.
NFL Trade Rumors: 49ers Eyeing Blockbuster Move for $54,490,000 Pro Bowler Before Tuesday’s Deadline
What can Chubb bring to the 49ers? A lot of experience along the defensive front. San Francisco must have been impressed with Chubb’s work for the Dolphins if they are reportedly looking to pick him up for the second half of this season.
Meanwhile, Johnson has 11 sacks in 38 career NFL games. He’s played his entire career with the Jets, so any potential move to the 49ers might give him an additional chance to add to his sack total.
The 49ers really do need help on defense. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has watched his team struggle with injuries throughout the season. Getting a healthy body on his defensive front would go a long way toward helping San Francisco. Chubb appears to be the primary target at this point, although all of this is based on rumors for now.
The coming hours will reveal whether this rumored deal becomes a reality.
