BVB got back
to winning ways, although the fans were made to wait, and wait, and wait for a winner. After 90 attacking minutes, interrupted only by a few counterattacks from Köln, BVB finally found the back of the net. It wasn’t pretty, but it was three points that Dortmund really could not go without this weekend, as Leipzig and Bayern both collected victories.
It was frankly a good performance from BVB that was only lacking goals. The attack was fluent and the defense (mostly) resolute, but Niko Kovac will certainly be practicing corners on the training pitch this week.
Here are today’s candidates for Man of the Match.
Felix Nmecha
Nmecha really imposed himself on the match today. The stats may not show it, but his four ball recoveries came at extremely important times, and his long ball distribution provided the width Dortmund used to attack on the cross again and again. He also unleashed several fiery attempts from distance, which helped keep Dortmund’s attack varied.
Ramy Bensebaini
Defensively stout and constantly involved. Bensebaini was a regular out-ball for the defense when space became tight on the right. BVB constantly looked to build up down the right with Adeyemi, and when Köln got too confident in closing Adeyemi down, Dortmund quickly swapped to Bense, who moved the ball into open space. Bensebaini also had TEN ball recoveries, in addition to NINETEEN passes into the final third.
Karim Adeyemi
I can understand why Adeyemi would want to obliterate a water bottle after coming out of the match today; he played excellently, and deserved a goal or an assist for his effort. Adeyemi used his pace and strength to beat the Köln defense again and again, and he should have been rewarded for his efforts. Dortmund’s attack immediately looked lost when he departed, and needed a few minutes to figure out the game-plan without their speedy attacker.
Waldemar Anton
Waldi was tasked with keeping the tricky Said El Mala quiet today, and it was no easy feat. El Mala is lighting quick and strong, with a low center of gravity and the ability to change direction at a moments notice. Anton struggled at times to keep the youngster quiet, but ultimately, El Mala did not make it on the scoresheet, so, job done. Credit to Anton for holding his own in a difficult 1:1 battle!
