It’s the Fourth of July. Independence Day. America’s birthday. The country turns 250, if you assert that the birth of the nation happened specifically on July 4, 1776—which a lot of people do. It’s as good a day as any, I suppose, though those days and months and years leading up to that point are a part of the American identity, too.
Like many of you, I’ve been watching a lot of the World Cup, and like many of you, I’ve also followed some of the delightful stories of Americans welcoming the varying
other teams and supporters into their communities with open arms. It reminds me of the best of this country, and it gives me hope that we can keep continually making our communities better, more prosperous, and more welcoming.
We’re throwing it back to an old school format this morning: that of ye olde off topic thread. Let’s go.
- What is your favorite Independence Day of recent years? What did you do, and why was it memorable?
- Someone invites you to a Fourth of July cookout. What food items do you hope are there?
- Unlike Memorial Day or Labor Day, the Fourth can be on a random day of the week. Do you prefer it as part of a long weekend or as a midweek break? Or does it just not matter?
- What’s something that you’ve missed from home when traveling internationally or wherever it is the furthest you’ve traveled in the States?
- Baseball may be an international game, but it’s historically been “America’s Pastime,” even if it may not be now. Have you ever tried to explain baseball to someone who doesn’t know anything about it? How did that go?
BONUS: World Cup, World Baseball Classic, Summer Olympics, or Winter Olympics?
