The entire focus from the outside looking in with the Cleveland Browns has been about the quarterback position. At practice on Friday, HC Todd Monken reiterated that Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson have not separated from each other, despite a noted difference in some snaps on Thursday.
Of almost equal importance, the Browns still have big decisions to make on their offensive line. At this point, only Zion Johnson seems locked into his position and that he will be starting. So with left guard locked in place,
who will fill the rest of the starters?
Most believe that first-round pick Spencer Fano has the left tackle job as his to lose, but he’s been alternating starting with veteran Dawand Jones during training camp. Tytus Howard received a contract extension after Cleveland traded for him, but he could slide inside to right guard or stay at right tackle. Elgton Jenkins has been dinged up, as has Parker Brailsford, so the center position is very much up in the air.
When I asked Monken about how important talent versus fit were on the offensive line, the coach led with the idea that the talent has to be present:
After discussions around the facility on Friday, it is very clear that Johnson is highly likely to stick at left guard and Fano is likely to start at some position. After that, the Browns starting offensive line could be decided by a combination of health and talent, even if players are lined up at positions that are somewhat unexpected.
Do you think fit should be important in deciding the Browns offensive line? If healthy, who do you think should be Cleveland’s starting five for Week 1 and at what positions?
