Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has accepted his bench role and has admitted he will be doing all he can to help No. 1 Joan Garcia adapt to life with the club.
Garcia has made an impressive start to life with Barcelona and put in another excellent showing in midweek in the Champions League win over Newcastle.
Szczesny, who is yet to feature this season, says he’s “proud” to play back-up and will do all he can to help the team and the new arrival.
“I am a substitute and, barring surprises, I will
continue to be so. My role this season is to prepare Joan García as best as possible for the matches. I think he is a goalkeeper with incredible potential, who is already among the best in Europe.
“I am very proud to play this role, as I was prepared for it from the signing of my new contract. And I’m not disappointed. Joan lacks experience at the highest level, and that is something he must consolidate. I will try to help him maintain a consistent level throughout the season. It’s not easy to play every three days under so much pressure. It is something that must be learned. I look forward to contributing to its success.“
Szczęsny has been nothing but gracious during his time with Barca. He made it clear last season he’d happily step aside for fit-again Marc-Andre ter Stegen and is now doing all he can to help out Garcia.
