Welcome to the 2025 edition of Ranking the Rockies, where we take a look back at every player to log playing time for the Rockies in 2025. The purpose of this list is to provide a snapshot of the player in context.
The “Ranking” is an organizing principle that’s drawn from Baseball Reference’s WAR (rWAR). It’s not something the staff debated. We’ll begin with the player with the lowest rWAR and end up with the player with the highest.
No. 45, Angel Chivilli (-0.7 rWAR)
Angel Chivilli was a pleasant surprise in 2024. The then-22-year-old made his MLB debut on June 3rd against the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field, pitching two innings and allowing two runs on four hits. The two runs came on a two-out, two-run homer by Tyler Stephenson in the ninth inning.
In total, Chivilli made 30 appearances in 2024, and posted a 4.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 31 ⅔ innings.
In 2025, like many other young relievers, the Dominican right-hander fell back to earth a bit.
Chivilli made 43 appearances and posted a 7.06 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 58 ⅔ innings. Chivilli started off fairly well, often pitching 1+ innings while allowing two or fewer runs through his first 14 games. However, things got a little shaky in May, and Chivilli was optioned for the first time on May 27th after allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 18 hits with four home runs, four walks and eight strikeouts in six outings between May 8-24.
After a month in the minors, Chivilli was recalled and looked like he’d regained some of his 2024 form. He stayed up for five games and allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 5 ⅔ innings before being optioned again.
When he was recalled at the end of July, things started to go wonky for the 23-year-old.
In his first appearance back in Cleveland, he allowed two runs on five hits with one walk and zero strikeouts over two innings. Then, he allowed four runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts on August 1st against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Three games later, he allowed four runs again (including a home run) in just ⅓ of an inning against the Toronto Blue Jays. Granted, those two games were a bit wild, but it still was not a great showing for Chivilli and he was optioned again on August 6th.
And then something else happened – Chivilli was placed on the restricted list on August 8th. It was never disclosed what put him on the restricted list, but he was activated and optioned on August 15th, before being recalled for a final time on August 22nd.
In his final 13 games, Chivilli pitched 16 ⅔ innings and posted a 6.48 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Unfortunately, both of those stats placed him near the bottom of the Rockies’ pitching leaderboard. And, of course, he allowed Cal Raleigh’s record 60th home run on September 24th:
In 2025, Chivilli’s pitch usage was close to the same as it was in 2024. He used his four-seam fastball a bit more and his changeup a little less, but used his slider about the same. And all three pitches saw an uptick in velocity – his fastball averaged 97.1 MPH in 2025 compared to 96.1 MPH in 2024.
In total, it was another building year for Angel Chivilli, like it was for many of the other young relievers (and general players) on the Rockies. With an incoming potential roster overhaul, it will be interesting to see which players are retained and which ones are released.
