Chivas made it three victories out of three matches as they defeated Queretaro by a 2-1 score. Chivas was the superior team and completely dominated in the first half but struggled after a mistake led to the first goal
scored on them in 2026. Chivas will now have a lot of their players go to play with the National team as they rest in the National team break before returning to action away to San Luis while Queretaro will host Pachuca when they return to action.
The 1st half started with Chivas coming out with the same starting 11 they used in the last two matches. A cross into the area was just out of reach of a header by Armando Gonzalez. Off a free kick, a cross into the area was headed by Daniel Aguire and it forced a save from Queretaro’s goalkeeper, Guillermo Allison. The ball would be deflected into the path of Gonzalez but he failed to score from close range into the open net in a bad miss. A great run from Gonzalez ended with him losing the ball after getting past three defenders. After getting to a cleared ball, Bernando Parra got off a right footed shot from outside the area that went wide. Efrain Alvarez got off a left footed shot from outside the area that went wide. Off a great counter, a great cross from Daniel Aguirre would reach a wide open Armando Gonzalez, who headed the ball from close range past Allison, to give Chivas the 1-0 lead. A cross into the area would force Allison to come out and clear the ball with a flying save. A great left footed shot from Roberto Alvarado forced Allison to make a great save. From outside the area, Brian Gutierrez got off a right footed shot that went wide. Off a counter, Matias Coronel got off a right footed shot that was deflected and forced Chivas’ goalkeeper, Raul Rangel, to make a great save. The 1st half ended and although Chivas had completely dominated so far, they had been close to getting tied with Coronel’s last minute chance.
The 2nd half started with both teams coming out with the same 11 they started the game with. From outside the area, Omar Govea would get off a right footed shot that would go wide. Queretaro subbed out Carlo Adriano for Lucas Rodriguez. A cross into the area was headed wide by Ali Avila. Off a counter, Gonzalez got the ball in the area but his left footed shot was blocked by Allison. A cross by Alvarez would turn into a shot that was saved brilliantly by Allison. A very good pass from Richard Ledezma would find Roberto Alvarado, who got off a right footed shot that went past Allison to score and give Chivas the 2-0 lead. Off a free kick, Francisco Venegas surprised by taking a shot instead off a cross and it forced Rangel to make a save. From outside the area, Alvarez got off a left footed shot that would go wide. Queretaro subbed out Bernardo Parra and Jean Unjanque for Michael Carcelen and Waldo Madrid. Chivas subbed out Omar Govea and Efrain Alvarez for Ruben Gonzalez and Yael Padilla. After getting the ball in the area, Ledezma got off a right footed shot that was saved by Allison. Chivas subbed out Armando Gonzalez and Richard Ledezma for Angel Sepulveda and Diego Campillo. Brayan Alonso Gonzalez would get off a left footed shot that was saved by Allison. From outside the area, a left footed shot from Santiago Homenchenko was blocked by Rangel but left there for Matias Coronel to get to the ball, get past Rangel and score a left footed shot into the empty net to score and place the scoreboard at 2-1. It was the first goal Chivas allowed in 2026 and it was a mistake by Rangel. Queretaro subed out Santiago Homenchenko and Jaime Gomez for Jhojan Julios and Fernando Gonzalez. Chivas subbed out Brian Gutierrez for Santiago Sandoval. A cross into the area forced Rangel to make a save. Chivas held on to get their third straight victory.
Chivas continued their great start to the 2026 Apertura season by getting their third win in three matches. Chivas now sits again in first place and they once again had a great performance although they might be some worries still as Queretaro complicated things at the end. Chivas completely dominated the first half and were the better team in the 2nd but they failed to convert many chances and when the mistake that let to the Queretaro goal happened, they lost confidence. The last minutes had Chivas holding on against a Queretaro side that has improved but is nowhere near a candidate for the title. Chivas will now take the Mexican National team break to rest but they have a significant number of players that will be going with the National team to play against Panama and Bolivia. When they return, Chivas will travel to face off against Atletico San Luis. Queretaro will not have any players missing action for those matches and they will be able to prepare for their return to action at home against Pachuca.
