Bayern Munich has been unstoppable this season in their second year under Vincent Kompany. The attack has been one of the best at the moment with 122 goals in all competitions. Striker Harry Kane is on track to get very close and even perhaps beat the record for the most goals in a single season in the Bundesliga.
Currently held by Kane’s predecessor at Bayern, the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, this record is as stubborn as they come. Standing for nearly four decades unscathed, the legendary
Gerd Müller had set it by scoring 40 goals in one season. Then came Robert Lewandowski who broke with 41 goals in 2020/21 season.
How close is Kane?
Harry Kane is on a good path to breach the goal. With 30 goals in 24 games, Kane is averaging 1.25 goals per game. There are 10 games remaining with Kane needing 12 goals to set a new record.
Following his brace against Dortmund in the Klassiker, Kane was quizzed by the press whether Lewandowski’s record was in his sights now. “I know this question will come up after every game now, but there are still many matches to play. I need to maintain consistency during this period, and we’ll see at the end of April if that’s possible,” answered Kane (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
With some tough games such as against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Leverkusen, Freiburg, Union Berlin it definitely will not be easy. However, Kane has much better service with the attackers around him compared to Lewandowski. Coupled with the great form he is in, Kane a fantastic shot at setting a superb record.
Why Lewandowski’s record will still be awesome even if Kane breaks it?
Well, firstly, because after it was set by Gerd Müller in the 1971/72 season, it Lewy who first broke it. Breaking a record after 40 years in itself is pretty awesome. Secondly, with all due respect to Harry Kane he is surrounded by a better quality of attackers than Lewy in his 20/21 season. Lewy could have pushed more with the quality of service that Kane is surrounded with.
Thirdly and most importantly, Lewy was injured and missed five games in that season! Yes ladies and gentlemen, that record is not from 34 games but from just 29 games. While math can’t strictly be applied, but for the sake of calculation, Lewy was hypothetically on track to hit 48 goals with the same goal rate had he played all the games.
So, even though we as Bayern fans can wish that Kane does break the record, it can’t take away how special Lewy’s record was. Contributing to the sextuple during that period, it shall always retain a special place in the club and league’s history and in the fans’ hearts.
