Aug 25 (Field Level Media) - Cincinnati Reds outfielder/first baseman Michael Toglia will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday, four days after injuring his right shoulder whilemaking a diving catch.
An MRI on Monday led to a diagnosis of a torn labrum. Reds team doctor TimKremchek will perform the operation.
The Monday update was a surprise to Toglia, according to Reds manager TerryFrancona.
"That kid, he swore he was going to play (soon)," Francona said. "When I sawhim in the
trainer's room the next day, he was trying to do stuff. That'spretty amazing to me."
Toglia started in left field against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, andhe laid out to catch Geraldo Perdomo's fly ball in the first inning. Heimmediately was in pain, flipping the ball away, and he was replaced in thefield by TJ Friedl.
The Reds placed Toglia on the 10-day injured list on Sunday and promotedutility man Ivan Johnson from Triple-A Louisville.
Toglia spent most of the season with Louisville, hitting .273 with 22 homersand 65 RBIs in 97 games before he was called up to the major league club onAug. 11. In 10 games for the Reds, he hit .115 (3-for-26) with no homers andone RBI.
Over the previous four seasons, Toglia played for the Colorado Rockies, and hehit 25 home runs while appearing in 116 games in 2024. In 290 major leaguegames overall, he has a .198 batting average with a .275 on-base percentage, a.384 slugging percentage, 42 homers and 109 RBIs.
