(Reuters) -Former U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev has enjoyed an up and down relationship with the crowd at Flushing Meadows over the years. Following are the main incidents after Sunday's latest:
2025 - FIRST ROUND V BENJAMIN BONZI (LOST)
Medvedev was facing match point and a straight sets defeat when a photographer wandered onto the Louis Armstrong Stadium court just as Bonzi misfired his first serve.
The umpire allowed Bonzi another first serve because of the unauthorised incursion and Medvedev
launched a tirade at the official before orchestrating a chorus of boos raining down from the stands.
The booing, and chants of "Second serve! Second serve!", continued for more than six minutes until there was sufficient order for Bonzi to resume.
The Frenchman, who threatened to walk off at one stage and asked that Medvedev be disqualified, failed to serve out and lost the fourth set to love before recovering his composure and progressing 6-3 7-5 6-7(5) 0-6 6-4.
"I got emotional," said Medvedev, 29. "Honestly, while living it, I was like, 'You know what, it could be fun maybe to finish my career with one match at the U.S. Open'."
2023 - ROUND TWO V CHRISTOPHER O'CONNELL (WON)
Medvedev was cruising at two sets up in the late night clash at Louis Armstrong Stadium until his Australian opponent launched a comeback in the third.
The Russian became increasingly frustrated as the crowd loudly backed O'Connell and his anger increased after he failed to convert two match points in the third-set tiebreak.
O'Connell won the tiebreak and Medvedev's temper boiled over early in the fourth set.
"Can you shut up?" he yelled as some fans entered the stadium as he was preparing to serve.
"Are you stupid or what?"
Medvedev won the match 6-2 6-2 6-7(8) 6-2.
2021 - FINAL V NOVAK DJOKOVIC (WON)
Medvedev was booed and whistled in Arthur Ashe Stadium as he closed on a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Djokovic to deny the Serbian a calendar year Grand Slam.
The fans refused to quieten despite the umpire's requests as the Russian served in the eighth and 10th games of the third set. Medvedev went on to win his only Grand Slam title.
"It was definitely tough," he said. "I definitely made some double-faults because of it.
"That makes it even more sweet that finally I managed to pass a first serve on the third match point."
2019 - THIRD ROUND V FELICIANO LOPEZ (WON)
In another late night match at Flushing Meadows, Medvedev incurred the ire of the fans by snatching a towel from a ballperson.
After receiving a code violation, he threw a racket towards the umpire and put his middle finger up to his head, triggering boos from the crowd in the stands.
The jeers continued after his 7-6(1) 4-6 7-6(7) 6-4 victory and the Russian extended his arms wide as if to welcome them.
"I want all of you to know when you sleep tonight, I won because of you," Medvedev told the fans in his on-court interview.
"The more you do this, the more I will win for you guys."
