Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, Jake Bauers and Luis Lara hit home runs for the host Milwaukee Brewers, who tied a franchise record for runs in a game in a 22-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
The Brewers also tied a modern-day record in MLB for the largest margin of victory in a shutout. Yelich's three-run homer with two outs in the fifth capped off the first big inning for Milwaukee. Hamilton, who went 3-for-5 with a career-high four RBIs, matched Yelich's feat an inning later.
Bauers followed up with a two-run shot later in the frame.
It was the biggest explosion since the Brewers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 22-2 on Aug. 28, 1992. Kyle Harrison (10-3) shined on the mound for the Brewers, punching out eight in five shutout innings. He gave up two hits and walked two.
For Seattle, the 22-run margin surpassed its previous worst defeat, a 21-1 loss to Houston on Sept. 8, 2019. Bryce Miller (4-7) had a stretch of nine straight retired in the middle of his outing but struggled on either side of that, giving up seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 4 2/3 innings. Brendan Donovan and Dominic Canzone each had a double for the Mariners, who only mustered five hits.
Cubs 4, White Sox 3
Alex Bregman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including a walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning, to boost the host Cubs to a victory against the White Sox.
The Cubs, who got homers from Pete Crow-Arsmtrong and Michael Busch in the first inning, clinched a series win against the American League Central-leading White Sox by winning in their last at-bat for the second straight night. Bregman singled against Trevor Richards (0-1) with two outs in the ninth.
Munetaka Murakami drilled his 29th home run, an opposite-field solo shot, while Colson Montgomery went 3-for-4 and Tristan Peters had two hits and an RBI for the White Sox.
Dodgers 7, Rockies 6
Shohei Ohtani homered, Teoscar Hernandez tripled and doubled and Los Angeles held off a late surge to beat Colorado in Denver.
It was Ohtani's third home run in the first two games of the series. Tommy Edman doubled twice and Freddie Freeman also had two hits. Tanner Scott, elevated to closer with Edwin Diaz on the injured list, picked up his 17th save. Catcher Hunter Feduccia left the game in the seventh due to a reported illness.
Willi Castro homered and scored three runs and TJ Rumfield and Jake McCarthy had two hits for each Colorado, which has dropped its first two games following a 5-4 road trip.
Yankees 3, Orioles 1
Trent Grisham homered and later hit a tiebreaking two-run single to carry New York past host Baltimore in the opener of a three-game series.
George Lombard Jr. joined Grisham with two hits for a lineup that managed only five and struck out 14 times. Yerry De los Santos (1-0) picked up the victory with two shutout innings in relief. Yankees starter Carlos Rodon, coming off the injury list for his first big league appearance since June 28, lasted four innings and gave up one run on two hits.
Coby Mayo homered for the Orioles, who stranded eight runners, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Shane Baz (4-13) was tagged with the loss despite striking out a season-best 10 batters in 6 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and was charged with all three runs. Baltimore has lost the last six games in which Baz has pitched.
Blue Jays 10, Rays 5
Alejandro Kirk produced three hits, a home run and three RBIs and Jose Soriano threw 5 2/3 solid innings to help Toronto earn a victory over Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Kazuma Okamoto and Josh Smith also homered, while George Springer and Ernie Clement both finished with three hits for the Blue Jays, whose 17 hits were their second-most in a game this season. Soriano (10-6) earned his first win since being shipped from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline. He yielded three runs on nine hits while striking two for Toronto, which won its sixth game in eight tries.
Nick Martinez (12-4) started for the Rays and allowed six runs on nine hits across 3 2/3 innings. He also struck out five and walked two. Taylor Walls drove in two runs for Tampa Bay, which has dropped four of its last five.
Padres 5, Mets 2
Fernando Tatis Jr. homered twice and Robbie Ray tossed six solid innings for visiting San Diego, which beat New York in the middle game of a three-game series.
Tatis also saved a grand slam, robbing Francisco Lindor with a leaping catch at the right field wall. Manny Machado homered and Ty France had an RBI single. Ray (11-7) surrendered one run on three hits. Mason Miller (31st save) tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
Luis Torrens and Luis Robert Jr. homered for the Mets, whose four-game winning streak was snapped. Torrens and Bo Bichette finished with two hits each. Mets rookie Zac Thornton (3-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.
Guardians 8, Giants 1
Trade deadline acquisition Jo Adell belted a mammoth three-run homer and had a career-high six RBIs in the first four innings, leading Cleveland past visiting San Francisco.
Adell launched a 455-foot home run in the first against Carson Whisenhunt (3-4), giving Cleveland a 3-0 lead. The 27-year-old outfielder tacked on a two-run single in the second, plating Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez for the second time apiece, then singled home Brayan Rocchio in the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-1.
National League All-Star Foster Griffin (14-4) worked six strong innings for Cleveland, allowing a solo homer to Bryce Eldridge and five total hits. The left-hander struck out six and walked two, winning his second straight start.
Phillies 6, Marlins 4
Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott each drove in two runs to guide Philadelphia to a victory over visiting Miami.
Philadelphia won its fifth straight despite a subpar outing from Zack Wheeler, who walked four in five innings while allowing two runs and two hits with seven strikeouts. Luis Arraez (three hits) and Justin Crawford (two hits, RBI) also made key contributions.
Griffin Conine had two hits, including a homer, and scored twice for Miami. The Marlins, who used six pitchers in a planned bullpen game, have dropped four of their last six.
Pirates 4, Tigers 1
Braxton Ashcraft gave up one run over eight innings and Oneil Cruz homered in his return to the lineup to help host Pittsburgh secure a victory over Detroit.
Ashcraft (13-5) struck out four, did not issue a walk and gave up five hits on an efficient 80 pitches to help the Pirates lock up a needed win. Ashcraft's gem followed his one-run, complete-game masterpiece last Thursday against the Marlins.
The only blemish on Ashcraft's start came in the fifth when rookie Brett Callahan hit his first major league home run -- a 393-foot blast to right field -- to break a scoreless stalemate. Callahan had two of the Tigers' five hits.
Red Sox 9, Diamondbacks 4
Adley Rutschman and Mickey Gasper each hit a solo home run to help Boston defeat the visiting Arizona. Rutschman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Gasper collected two hits and two walks and drove in two runs.
The Red Sox had 13 hits in the game and have scored 20 runs while winning the first two games in the three-game series. Rutschman's home run in the third inning was his ninth of the season, but his first since the Baltimore Orioles traded him to the Red Sox on Aug. 3.
Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam off Ranger Suarez in the third inning for the Diamondbacks, who have lost their last three games. Arizona's Ketel Marte missed his second straight game. He traveled to Phoenix to get an MRI exam on his balky left knee one day after failing to report to Fenway Park.
Twins 4, Braves 1
Josh Bell went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, and Minnesota pulled away for the win over Atlanta in Minneapolis.
Ryan Jeffers finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs for Minnesota, which won the second straight game in the series. Twins closer Yoendrys Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season and his second save in as many nights.
Drake Baldwin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run to lead Atlanta at the plate. Michael Harris II was 3-for-4 with two doubles, which marked the Braves' only other extra-base hits.
Rangers 5, Nationals 0
Cal Quantrill pitched seven strong innings, Justin Foscue homered and Texas opened a six-game homestand with a win over Washington in Arlington.
Corey Seager had a double and a single, and Wyatt Langford had two hits, a walk and two runs scored for the Rangers, who were coming off a disappointing 2-5 road trip. Quantrill (5-4) gave up four hits and struck out five without a walk.
CJ Abrams had a double and a single for the Nationals, who were shut out for just the fourth time this season. Jackson Kent (0-1) made his second major league start for Washington and gave up five runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. Washington has lost four straight and six of seven.
Angels 3, Astros 1
George Klassen twirled a career-best seven shutout innings in his fifth career start, and visiting Los Angeles recorded two-out RBIs in three successive innings to defeat Houston.
Klassen (2-1) surrendered four baserunners -- one hit and three walks -- and recorded a career-best seven strikeouts. Josh Lowe belted a solo shot, Zach Neto hit an RBI double Nolan Schanuel added an RBI single.
Cam Smith ended the Angels' shutout bid with a homer, his 17th, leading off the eighth against reliever Jose Fermin. Astros starter Cristian Javier (1-4) gave up two runs on five hits in four innings.
Cardinals 3, Reds 0
Masyn Winn homered, doubled twice and scored twice, Kyle Leahy tossed five shutout innings as visiting St. Louis blanked Cincinnati.
Leahy (10-4) only allowed three singles to win his third straight start. Riley O'Brien picked up his 32nd save in 37 chances as the bullpen only allowed one baserunner in four innings. Jose Fermin and Joshua Baez drove in the other Cardinal runs.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott (6-8) managed to work into the seventh inning, allowing two runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Royals 4, Athletics 3
Bobby Witt Jr. delivered the game-winning single in the ninth inning as Kansas City rallied for three in the frame against the visiting Athletics.
The Royals had the bases loaded in the eighth when Tyler Tolbert appeared to go too far on a check swing, but it was ruled a ball by first-base umpire Alex Tosi. Tolbert then delivered a pinch-hit single that drove in Rave and Massey to tie it 3-3. Later in the inning, Elvis Alvarado gave up a two-out bloop single to Witt that allowed Jensen to come home for the winning run.
Jeff McNeil had two hits and an RBI for the A's, who have lost six of their last eight games. Manager Mark Kotsay was ejected for arguing the call on Tolbert.
