ATP Implements AI Program to Combat Online Abuse Against Players

The ATP Tour has announced the success of its Safe Sport initiative, which has flagged over 162,000 abusive comments directed at players on social media within its first year. The program, launched in July 2024, utilizes real-time AI to scan and hide severe comments from the accounts of targeted players. This initiative is available to the top 250 singles players and the top 50 doubles players. According to Andrew Azzopardi, ATP's director of safeguarding, the program has significantly changed the way athletes are protected online, although it is acknowledged that it won't eliminate abuse overnight. The initiative also supports players facing email threats, impersonation, deepfakes, and scams.
