New Delhi: Australia were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after the Group B match between Zimbabwe and Ireland was washed out due to incessant rain in Pallekele. After slumping to a second successive
defeat in the tournament, losing to Sri Lanka on Monday, Australia needed a favour from Ireland in Tuesday's match. However, rain gods had other plans.
The match was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Pallekele International Stadium, and Zimbabwe, after receiving a point, reached 5 points and qualified for the Super 8s as the second team from Group B behind table toppers Sri Lanka.
Ireland's campaign also ended on 3 points, including a win against Oman.
The 2026 World Cup Super 8 berth is a landmark moment for Zimbabwe, who have progressed from the group stage for the first time in the tournament's history. The African nation was rewarded for impressive wins against Oman and Australia.
For the Aussies, the 2026 edition of the marquee tournament concludes in an anti-climactic manner. The 2021 champions' campaign was marred by injuries, surprise selection calls, and an uncharacteristic lack of hunger and desire.
This is the first time in 17 years that Australia have not advanced past the group stage in T20 World Cups. In the 2009 edition, Australia lost both Group C games - against Sri Lanka and the West Indies - and were knocked out of the competition.
