Team India veteran pacer Mohammed Shami has taken a dig at BCCI selectors for his omission from the team’s ODI squad for the upcoming Australia series. Shami hasn’t played any match for India since March 9, when the Rohit Sharma-led pack beat New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final held at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Shami didn’t get the opportunity in India’s crucial assignments such as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025 played in the UAE. After facing the Aussie ODI snub, Shami didn’t miss a chance to take aim at selectors.
Speaking to the media before Bengal’s maiden Ranji Trophy 2025/26 game against Uttarakhand at Eden Gardens, Shami said, "I have said this before... Selection is not in my hands. If
there is a fitness issue, I shouldn't be here playing for Bengal. I think I do not need to speak on this and create a controversy. If I can play four-dayers (Ranji Trophy), I can also play 50-overs cricket. About giving an update, it's not my responsibility to give an update or ask for an update. It's not my job to give updates on my fitness.”
Mohammed Shami’s performance in the Champions Trophy 2025
Mohammed Shami played five matches for Indiain the Champions Trophy 2025, bagging nine wickets at an economy of 5.68. Following the marquee ICC event, the 35-year-old also served Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. However, his performance wasn’t upto the mark as he could pick up only six wickets in nine outings at an expensive economy of 11.23.
In August, he also appeared for the East Zone against the North Zone in Duleep Trophy 2025 quarter-final held in Bengaluru. The pacer registered 1/100 and 0/36 figures in the contest. India will start their campaign in Australia on October 19, with the first ODI to be played at the Optus Stadium.
