On this day, January 28: Shamar Joseph inspired West Indies win a Test match in Australia after 27 years. West Indies were batting first and scored 311 runs in the first innings. Windies were in early
trouble having lost five wickets for just 64 runs. But half centuries from Kavem Hodge, Joshua da Silva and Kevin Sinclair helped them post a total of 311 which looked a very good score. Mitch Starc was the pick of the bowlers for Australia scalping four wickets.
In reply, Australia scored 289/9 before declaring. Australia were in all sorts of trouble at 54/5 and were starring at a huge deficit. But opener Usman Khawaja stood firm scoring a classy 75 before departing. Both Alex Carey and Pat Cummins provided good support with the bat as both of them scored half centuries. Kemar Roach picked up three wickets while Alzarri Joseph scalped four wickets as Australia decided to declare at 289/9. West Indies took a small first-innings lead.
In the third innings, West Indies could not get going as they were all-out for 193. No batter could get a half century and the highest scorer was Kirk Mckenzie with 41. Australian bowlers were too good with Josh Hazelwood picking up three wickets and off-spinner Nathan Lyon also scalping three wickets. Australia were set a target of 216 to chase and would have fancied their chances.
Australia started well and it looked like Australia would get there without fuss as they were 113/2 and needed only 103 runs to win with eight wickets in hand. Steve Smith was batting beautifully and went past a half century. Then came Shamar Joseph, who changed the game on its head with wickets of Cameron Green and Travis Head off consecutive balls as they were 114/4 in a matter of an over. Shamar Joseph with an injured toe bowled very fast and then dismissed Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey as Australia were reeling at 136/6.
At the start of the final session on day four, Australia were eight down and needed 24 runs to win with Steve Smith from one end. Shamar Joseph was brilliant once again as he knocked Josh Hazlewood over for his seventh wicket and West Indies managed to win eight runs. This was their first Test victory in Australia in nearly three decades. Shamar Joseph was the player of the match and it was a memorable day for him.
