From record-breaking dominance in ODIs to remarkable late Test resurgence, a legacy across formats
Rohit Sharma’s dominance in international cricket especially in ICC events has always been highly rated.. In the One Day Internationals, he has scored 11,577 runs along with 61 half-centuries and 33 centuries. He is the only player to have struck three double-centuries in the format, including the astonishing world-record score of 264. His ability to accelerate after reaching three figures is remarkable. Rohit scored five centuries during the 2019 ODI World Cup—a feat that remains a benchmark for opening batters. Even as he focuses solely on the 50-over game today, his average remains near 49 and his display of power-hitting early in the innings remains the same.
While the white-ball format brought him fame, Rohit’s late-career surge in Test cricket was equally remarkable. Since being promoted to open in 2019, he transformed into a red-ball specialist, finishing his Test career with 4,301 runs and 12 centuries. His T20I legacy is equally secured, retiring as the format's highest run-scorer at the time of his exit in 2024. Combined with six IPL titles (five as captain), Rohit’s trophy cabinet is perhaps the most decorated in the history of the sport.
Now, the main concern for cricketing fans across the globe will be his availability in the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup as they want him avenge their heartbreak at Ahmedabad in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup Finals. The Indian fans will be hoping that their idol can add another feather to his hat and retire from the format as one of the all-time greats of the game.
