The Indian cricket team is currently hosting South Africa in a multi-format series, starting with the two-match Test series. The first Test commenced on Friday, November 14 at the iconic Eden Gardens with Temba
Bavuma winnings the toss and electing to bat first. After opting to bat first, the Protean side were dismissed at the score of 159, courtesy a five-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah, along with two wickets each for Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.
In return, India completed the trail on Day 2 and were dismissed having posted a lead of 30 runs. Simon Harmer was the pick among the Protean bowlers, registering figures of 4 for 30 in his 15.2 overs, whereas Marco Jansen also got three to his name. For India, KL Rahul was the top scorer, posting 39 runs off 119 deliveries, but the hosts were also handed a setback as Shubman Gill was forced to walk off the field retired hurt.
Shubman Gill sits out with neck spasm; to be monitored closely: BCCI
The incident took place in the 35th over of India’s first innings after Gill smashed Harmer for a boundary over backward square. Soon afterwards, he was spotted clutching to his neck in pain. Later on, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI0 shared an update on Gill, while confirming that he will not take the field to bat as well as in the second South Africa innings. “Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress”, BCCI wrote on X.
In his place, Sai Sudarshan walked out to field whereas Rishabh Pant, who is the vice-captain, took charge.
