On this day, January 31, 2019: Trent Boult picks up 5 wickets as India suffer a massive ODI defeat against New Zealand. It was the fourth ODI and India had already won the series having won the first three ODI matches. The venue was Hamilton and New Zealand bounced back in style. In the fourth ODI, India were batting first and under helpful conditions, left arm pacer Trent Boult wreaked havoc. India started well and the first wicket fell for 21 as Boult got Shikhar Dhawan trapped in front for 13.

Boult continued and along with Colin de Grandhomme made life difficult for the Indian batters. Boult dismissed Rohit Sharma as India were 23/2 and suddenly a flurry of wickets fell. India from 33/2 went to 33/5 as Rayudu, Karthik and Shubman Gill all

were dismissed cheaply.

Trent Boult had three wickets at this point and he was given an extended spell by the captain. He did not disappoint as he dismissed Kedar Jadhav as India were 35/6. From the other end Colin de Grandhomme struck as Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the seventh wicket to go for 40. Boult got his fifth wicket a few overs later as he dismissed Hardik Pandya. India were 55/8 at one stage and somehow managed their way to reach 92 before getting bowled out. Trent Boult was the star of the show and he returned with figures of 10-4-21-5. It was a dream spell for the New Zealand pacer.

Chasing a target of just 92, New Zeaand went all guns blazing and despite losing a few wickets they chased down the target within 15 overs. Henry Nicholls was unbeaten on 30 while Ross Taylor was unbeaten on 37 of just 25 balls as New Zealand brushed off India. This was also India’s biggest defeat in terms of balls remaining with 212 balls left. It was a memorable day for New Zealand and Trent Boult. In this same match, Shubman Gill had made his ODI debut and it did not go well as he was dismissed for nine runs of 21 balls and India lost the match.
