In match number 18 of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, Sri Lanka Women is taking on South Africa Women at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. While the Chamari Athapaththu-led side are still looking
for their maiden win in the ongoing tournament, their Protean counterpart have been brilliant, having won their last three games on the trot.
As the two teams walked out for their respective national anthems after Sri Lanka Women won the toss and elected to bat first, the co-hosts were seen donning black armbands. Members of the team, along with the support staff were seen sporting black armbands in tribute of former Sri Lankan cricketer Jayananda Warnaweera.

The former Sri Lankan cricketer passed away on Thursday, October 16, aged 64. Warnaweera represented the Lankans in 10 Tests and six ODIs between 1986 and 1994. He made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1986 and played key roles in several series against India, New Zealand, and England.
Speaking of the tournament, Sri Lanka Women are placed eighth in the points table, having registered two defeats in four games whereas two of their games have ended in no results due to rain. With three more games left for them, they will hope to get wins in order to remain in contention for the top four spot.
