On Monday, October 13, Jack Wilshere, the former England and Arsenal player, got named as the new manager of Luton Town, who are currently playing in League One, the third tier of football in England. The 33-year-old has replaced Matt Bloomfield, who was sacked by the club hierarchy earlier this month after managing their first team at Kenilworth Road for less than a year, getting relegated from the Championship towards the end of last season.
Notably, just two seasons ago, Luton Town were a part of the Premier League before two successive relegations have brought them down in the doldrums of League One football, but not everything seems to be lost. Jack Wilshere, who is going to be a full-time manager of a professional club for the first-time
in his career, reportedly on a three-year deal, will be taking over a team placed 11th in the English third tier with 16 points in 11 matches including just five wins.
It's a huge honour and a privilege to be named Luton Town manager: Jack Wilshere
At the Bedfordshire-based club, Jack Wilshere will have Chris Powell, the former England player, as his assistant, covering for Gary Waddock, who is currently recovering from an ankle injury. In his first comments on the development, Jack Wilshere said to the club website, “It's a huge honour and a privilege to be named Luton Town manager. It feels like a full-circle moment for me. I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it's fate that my first full-time club managerial position is at this club.”
"This club's story inspires me. Built on belief, unity, and hard work. The club have shown incredible character on and off the pitch in recent times, and I'm honoured to lead to take the responsibility to lead this group into the future,” Jack Wilshere also said about Luton Town, and he will be aiming to earn them a promotion sooner rather than later. Moreover, after ending his playing career in 2022, he was in charge of Arsenal’s U-18 team apart from managing Norwich City on an interim basis in the Championship last season.
The first match as manager of Luton Town for Jack Wilshere will be a home match against Mansfield Town on Saturday, October 18, in the League One competition.
