Sunil Joshi
, the former India cricketer, who is the spin bowling coach at Punjab Kings (PBKS), has reportedly stepped down from his role at the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. The 55-year-old, who was a part of the support staff under head coach Ricky Ponting - taking PBKS to the final of the IPL 2025 - is understood to have written about his inability to continue in the role on Sunday, October 5.As per the report published in Cricbuzz, with the decision planned to leave PBKS ahead of the IPL 2026, Sunil Joshi is looking to join the Centre of Excellence (CoE) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Bengaluru. Notably, the former spin bowler was a part of PBKS from 2020 to 2022 under then head coach Anil Kumble’s staff
before joining the Indian selection committee both as the selector and chief selector.

Apart from writing to the PBKS officials about his decision, Sunil Joshi also believed to have penned something to this effect to Ricky Ponting with the latter being appreciative of him. The former Australian cricketer understood the magnitude of the opportunity to work under BCCI despite preferring Sunil Joshi to stay at PBKS and work alongside him to take the franchise to new heights.
Moreover, a PBKS official spoke to Cricbuzz about the latest development in regards to the coaching staff at the franchise. They were quoted as saying, “He (Sunil Joshi) has written to us about his unavailability for the coming season. He is a good guy and the franchise has a good equation with him. But we don't want to come in the way of someone's career growth.”
