In their latest Premier League match, Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brentford at the GTech Community Stadium last weekend. With yet another drubbing in the ongoing 2025-26 campaign, Manchester United find themselves in 14th place in the Premier League, collecting just seven points in six matches under their current manager Ruben Amorim, not able to secure back-to-back top flight wins with him in charge in nearly a year.
Following the tough loss, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney on his latest podcast show on BBC said that he doesn’t have faith in Ruben Amorim to bring back the glory days while categorically mentioning that the soul of the club has gone and it’s “broken”. Notably, during the current manager’s tenure,
the Red Devils have collected just 34 points in 33 matches, which puts them in the category of the relegation threatened teams over the course of a single season.
There needs to be big changes in my opinion: Wayne Rooney on Manchester United
While the Manchester United club hierarchy is still backing Ruben Amorim amid tumultuous times, the patience of the former players and the fans is wearing thin by the minute. Wayne Rooney was also critical of the players at the club, stating that some of them aren’t deserving of wearing the shirt while pointing out that the team “needs a new engine” to start winning again consistently.
Wayne Rooney further remarked, “I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence, there needs to be big changes in my opinion. Manager, players, whatever that is. Whatever it takes to get Manchester United back.” Moreover, when Ruben Amorim was interviewed after losing to Brentford about his future at the club, he said, “I am never concerned about my job - I am not that kind of guy.”
One of the biggest criticisms of the Portuguese-born manager has been his willingness to stick with the 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 formation regardless of the poor results from Manchester United on a regular basis.
