With the second Test of the two-match Test series between India and West Indies underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the second day also saw the home side dominate the visitors. Resuming the innings at 318/2 after century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and an 87-run knock from Sai Sudharsan, India continued to score at a brisk rate with Day 2 seeing Shubman Gill score his tenth Test hundred.
Earlier in the morning, which saw India resume batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in the middle, saw the former depart to the pavilion after a mix-up. The Indian opener was dismissed run-out after scoring 175 off 258 deliveries, but Shubman Gill steadied the innings, scoring his fifth Test hundred as the Indian skipper. While he was well supported
by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was promoted to number five and played a 54-ball 43, Gill also stitched a crucial stand with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who scored 44 off 79.
West Indies show grit as they end Day 2 at 140/4; trail India by 378 runs
But after the Windies skipper cleaned by Dhruv Jurel, India declared the innings, returning to the pavilion having posted 518/5 with Shubman Gill unbeaten at 129. Thereafter, the visiting side took the guards in the middle with opening batter John Campbell looking good. However, a brisk catch by Sai Sudharsan ended Campbell’s innings. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze also stitched a crucial stand, but departed having scored 34 and 41 respectively.
As the day two neared its closure, Shai Hope (31*) looked good in the middle, sharing a crucial partnership with Tevin Imlach (14*) as West Indies posted 140/4 after 43 overs. For India, Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets whereas Kuldeep Yadav got one to his name as West Indies trail by 378 runs at Stumps on day two.
