On Thursday, September 18, Sri Lanka confirmed their spot in the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours after six-wicket win over Afghanistan in their final Group B match, which was held at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. On the back of Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten 74 off 52 deliveries, the Lankans secured their place in the final four, alongside Bangladesh, who finished in second place.
While the match might have ended in favour of the Lankans, but Afghanistan too had its moment with veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi playing a gritty knock of 22-ball 60, which included his six hitting spree against Dunith Wellalage. Although, the on-field moments rest on one side, the Sri Lankan camp was overshadowed by the demise of young spinner’s father’s demise.

However,
the Sri Lankan all-rounder was informed of the news right after the match, he left the country to fly back home for his father’s last rites. After being informed of his father’s death, video of which is going viral, the 22-year-old left for Colombo on the earliest available flight. Videos of his departure from UAE is going viral on social media.
While it remains unclear whether the 22-year-old will return to UAE for the remainder of the tournament with the Super Four stage set to be played between September 20 to 26. However, it is highly unlikely that Dunith Wellalage will return for Sri Lanka’s Super Four game against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
