Esports is now officially recognized as a legitimate sport in India, following the passage of the Indian Online Gaming Act 2025. This opens a lot of genuine career options for esports gaming enthusiasts, including esports players, coaches, analysts, content creators, and more. If you have a great knowledge of the game, you can become a coach of the esports team.
At BMPS 2025 in New Delhi, one of the most successful BGMI coaches, Amit Dubey, sat down with SportsTiger to share his journey, tips, and requirements to become a coach, and more.
Amit Dubey has coached teams like Team Soul, Carnival Gaming, 4Merical Esports, and K9 Esports. As a coach, he won major titles like BMPS Season 1, BGMS 2025, and OS Invitational Season 1.

When asked why he coaches
and what he teaches his players, Dubey credited his personal journey as a player, "This is basically my experience. Before becoming a coach, I myself played and represented India in the PC version of the game. So, I have different perspectives on how people are playing in India, how they're playing outside India, and what the meta is like in different places. The next update that is coming to the game, I get to play it on the PC version six months to a year in advance. So, the knowledge I gain from playing it earlier gives a slight advantage to the team I'm coaching, compared to other teams who only find out about the update after it arrives in the game."
"Also, I have played many LAN events on PC, so I have that e-sports experience of watching the scene for a long time. I have seen many rosters make many mistakes. So, after watching just one or two games, I can tell from experience what a team is lacking, what needs to be fixed, and if it can even be fixed or not. That experience helps them. Also, for the game they want to play, the Central Game, you need to know what position to take, whether to sit in the center or on the edge. Everything I've observed in my six-year career in PUBG, BGMI, and PUBG Mobile helps the new team I coach. All that experience is carried over to them, and it is definitely beneficial," he added.
Dubey believes that every role in a squad is vital. Recalling his time with Team SouL, he shared: "I coached a team named Team SouL. We also tried replacing a support player with an assaulter at one time, but we realized that it didn't work out."
According to Dubey, not everyone can step into the role of a coach. "In my opinion, the most initial thing required to become a coach is to have played in the role of an In-Game Leader (IGL). If you have played the game as an IGL, you know how the game runs and how the team runs. If you are only watching the game from the outside, you will never be able to tell the team how to run the game. So, it is very important for you to have played the game as an IGL when you are looking back at it," he further addressed.
