With the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 underway in India and Sri Lanka, in match number 12, the Sri Lankan women’s side
went down against England Women, registering a 89-run defeat at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 11. After the England women’s side posted a competitive 253/9, courtesy a 117-run knock from skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, the Sri Lankan side were seen struggling in the run-chase.While Hasini Perera opened the innings with skipper Chamari Athapaththu during the chase of 254-run target, the latter had to be stretched off early in the second innings. As the Sri Lankan skipper went down at the non-striker’s end after completing a single in the sixth over, she was spotted clutching to her right leg, raising
concerns in the camp.

While she was seen in pain, the physio was quick to come out and treat her, but seeing no difference, she was stretched off, retired hurt. Although, the Sri Lankan camp did confirm that Chamari Athapaththu was been treated on her cramp in her right leg, they also confirmed that she might walk out to bat if needed at a later stage in the game.
But after the fall of the third wicket off just 98 runs, the Sri Lanka Women skipper walked back to the field, emulating Rishabh Pant’s fighting spirit in the fourth Test if the England tour. However, her return did not make much of a difference as she departed in the 29th over after scoring 15 off 39.
As a result, Sri Lanka Women were seen in a position of despair as they got bundled out at the score of 164 in 45.4 overs. For England, Sophie Ecclestone was the pick, scalping four wickets while conceding 17 runs in her 10 overs. Skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt also got two to her name whereas Charlotte Dean, Alice Capsey and Linsey Smith got two, one and one each, respectively.
