Lucknow Super Giants' suffered a major loss last night at the Wankhede stadium that ended their campaign for the playoffs for IPL 2026. Despite a stellar momentum from players like Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran, the Super Giants lost momentum midway and put up a target of 224 which was easily chased by the Mumbai Indians. The match also witnessed the return of ‘Hitman’ who scored a comfortable 82 in less than 50 balls.
Despite the loss, the LSG owner, Sanjiv Goenka posted a heartfelt message with a picture of Rohit Sharma appreciating his innings. He also appreciated Sharma’s grounded, respectful and humble nature.
"What stands out about Rohit isn’t just how well he plays, but also the way he carries himself: grounded, respectful, consistent.
Rohit, people don’t call you legend for no reason. Always a pleasure talking [to] you. I’m sure your greatness will inspire generations to come.”
Lucknow Super Giants loses race to playoffs 2026
As of May 5, 2026, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are virtually out of the IPL 2026 playoff race following their sixth consecutive defeat. While they are not yet mathematically eliminated, their chances are estimated at just 2%. LSG currently sits at the bottom of the table after their latest loss to Mumbai Indians on May 4, 2026. After a decent start (2 wins in 3 games), the team has suffered a demoralising streak of seven defeats in their last nine matches. To reach the typical 14-point qualification threshold, LSG must win all five of their remaining fixtures.
At -1.076, LSG has the worst NRR in the tournament. Even if they win out, they would likely lose any tiebreaker against mid-table teams. Captain Rishabh Pant admitted after the MI game that the team now needs a "lot of luck" and specific results from other matches to stay in contention. The team has shuffled the opening pair and middle order constantly. The costly signing of Rishabh Pant (₹27 crore) has struggled, averaging only 25.50 with a strike rate of 150, well below his peak.
