On Monday, October 6, Luton Town made the decision to sack manager Matt Bloomfield after slumping to 11th place in the English third tier competition League One after losing to Stevenage 2-0 at Broadhall
Way. The 41-year-old had joined Luton Town as manager in January in the Championship following the departure of Rob Edwards, and it happened when he had Wycombe Wanderers in promotion place in League One.
Notably, during his nine-month tenure as the manager of Luton Town, Matt Bloomfield oversaw the club getting relegated for the second season in a row from Championship to League One on goal difference. The start of the 2025-26 campaign in the English third tier began well for Luton Town under him, winning three of the first four matches before it all started to come crashing down.
After losing to Lincoln City 3-1 at Sincil Bank last month, Matt Bloomfield received the public backing from Luton Town Chief Executive Gary Sweet, but it was short-lived. Just 10 days later, with just one win in last five League One matches, Bloomfield got sacked from job by Sweet after indicating earlier that he would have no qualms about changing things at the club if things didn’t improve, which was the case.
The process of appointing a new manager is now underway: Luton Town statement
The official statement from Luton Town on Matt Bloomfield’s sacking read, “Performances and results from the opening 11 matches of the current campaign in League One have fallen below the levels expected.” They also wrote, “With two training weeks ahead of the next league match, the process of appointing a new manager is now underway, which will be led by a committee involving members from the executive team, recruitment, football staff and the board.”
With the exit of Matt Bloomfield’s staff alongside him, academy coach Alex Lawless, who was a former player at Luton Town, has been put in interim charge of the club.
