Shubman Gill will make his IndiaODI captaincy debut in the upcoming three-match series against Australia to kick off from October 19. BCCI’s decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Gill in the leadership
role got criticism from many fans as they believed that he should have continued after delivering the Champions Trophy title win in March. However, former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels BCCI has taken the correct decision by appointing Gill as India’s new ODI skipper.
Ganguly cited Shubman Gill’s record as Test captain in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 and showed trust in the 26-year-old. “I congratulate him. He led India well in England. He is a good player and will continue to perform well in the future because the Indian team is strong. It is a self-selected team; all players are performing, which is why they got the opportunity,” remarked the ex-India captain while speaking to the media.
Sourav Ganguly praised Rohit Sharma’s contribution to Team India
Sourav Ganguly believes Rohit Sharma was taken into confidence regarding the captaincy change. Ganguly also highlighted the 38-year-old’s couple of ICC title victories. “I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. So, I don’t know whether it is ‘sacking’ or anything. I am sure it is a mutual discussion. Because Rohit has been an outstanding leader. In the last two years, he has won the T20 World Cup. He has won the Champions Trophy,” added Ganguly.
India will play the first ODI against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth on October 19. Gill will be expected to lead India from the front while Rohit and another veteran Virat Kohli fans will want both to dominate bowlers. India won their last ODI series down under in 2019, under Kohli’s captaincy.
