With the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) returning with its 2025 edition from November 9, the Sydney Sixers are all set for some major changes before they take the field. Reckoned as one of the most successful
teams in the WBBL history, Sydney Sixers on Friday, November 7 announced their new skipper in Ashleigh Gardner.
Taking to social media, the Sixers announced the end of Ellyse Perry’s tenure as Sydney Sixers captain and named Ash Gardner as her replacement at the helm. Notably, Perry, who has led the side since its inaugural edition in 2015-16, has led the side to two title wins, which came in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
I’m honoured to be appointed captain: Ashleigh Gardner ahead of WBBL 2025
The franchise in a post on X wrote, “A new era for the Sixers” while introducing Ashleigh Gardner as their captain for season 11. Notably, Gardner, who briefly captained the Sydney franchise in 2023, expressed gratitude on the new role. "I'm honoured to be appointed captain of the Sydney Sixers, a club I've proudly represented for my whole career,” she said.
The Aussie international also shared her experience of playing alongside veterans like Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy and others stating, “Over the past decade, I've learned from some amazing leaders, including Pez [ Perry] and Midge [Healy] at the Sixers, and I can't wait to lead the team.”
Under the new leadership, the Sydney Sixers will hope to overturn their recent results as they have struggled, missing out on the finals in five of the last six seasons. The Sydney Sixers will begin their WBBL 2025 campaign on Sunday, November 9, against the Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground in Perth.
