Former Team India captain MS Dhoni visited Madurai on October 9, to inaugurate the Velammal Cricket Stadium. After his retirement from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has been active in IPL only so whenever he is seen with his bat, his supporters get elated. In Madurai, he was invited as a chief guest to inaugurate the cricket venue. From the event, a video is going viral on social media in which the legend can be seen batting in the middle against bowlers who are at the nascent stage of their careers. Spectators at the stadium looked ecstatic to see Dhoni holding a bat.
The stadium has been built by the Velammal Education Trust in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). It has a seating capacity of 7,300 and in future,
it might be increased to 20,000.
MS Dhoni’s magnificent stint with Team India
MS Dhoni served India from 2004 to 2020 and during this period, he also captained India from 2007 to 2016. Under his leadership stint, India won three ICC trophies (T20 World Cup 2007, World Cup 2011, and Champions Trophy 2013). He is the only skipper to pull off all three ICC trophies. Discussing his batting records, he hoarded 17266 runs in 538 matches across all formats. In ODIs, he is the sixth-leading run-getter for India, scoring 10773 runs in 350 games at an average of 50.57.
This year, he was seen in CSK colours in IPL 2025. He scored 196 runs in 13 innings of 14 games, at a strike rate of 135.17. After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s exit from the competition due to an injury, he also captained Super Kings but couldn’t take them to the playoffs. His supporters are eager to see him in the upcoming IPL edition. In the cash-rich league, Dhoni is the oldest player. At the age of 44, he is still active with Chennai.
