India crush Afghanistan by innings and 300 runs to register biggest Test win in history

India won by an innings and 300 runs against Afghanistan on June 8, 2026, marking the country's biggest Test cricket victory in history.The spin bowlers dominated the field on day three of the one-off Test match at the ⁠Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Their last highest win by innings and runs was in Rajkot in 2012, when they played against West Indies and won by an innings and 272 runs.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, India's top order took full advantage of the conditions. The team built a towering score of 564/8 before declaring. Captain Shubman Gill played an authoritative, elegant innings to score 126 runs off 177 balls. He stitched together a massive 151-run partnership with wicketkeeper

Rishabh Pant. Alongside him, KL Rahul anchored the middle order with a flawless 100 runs off 165 balls.

Sai Sudharsan set the tone early with a brisk 81 runs. Rishabh Pant matched that score exactly, blasting a highly entertaining 81 runs off 121 balls, including 3 huge sixes. Lower down the order, Washington Sundar brought up his 6th Test fifty with an unbeaten 52 runs. He partnered with debutant Manav Suthar (28 runs) to add quick runs before the declaration. Right-arm pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi bowled his heart out in 39-degree heat.

He bowled 27 overs and fought to claim a maiden Test 6-wicket haul for 140 runs, ensuring India didn't cross the 600-run mark. In a stellar debut, 23-year-old left-arm spinner Manav Suthar recorded figures of 6/33, marking the third-best bowling performance by an Indian debutant and dismantling Afghanistan for 152. Afghanistan was bundled out for a tiny 112 runs after India made them bat again. This second-innings collapse was even faster and worse than their first try.The visitors could not handle the spinning ball and fell apart in just 35.5 overs. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz tried to hit his way out of trouble. He smashed 24 runs off 24 balls with three fours and a six, but his aggressive style cost him his wicket early. Sediqullah Atal was the only batsman who stayed at the crease for a long time. He fought hard for his 42 runs off 80 balls. However, he kept losing his partners at the other end. Washington Sundar was the main weapon for India in the second innings. He bowled beautiful lines and trapped the batsmen to finish with amazing figures of 4 wickets for 36 runs.

 

Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav came on to finish the job. He bamboozled the lower-order batsmen and took 3 wickets for 30 runs. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj also joined the party and took 1 wicket. Afghanistan was technically all out when their 9th wicket fell. This is because Sharafuddin Ashraf had a bad muscle injury from earlier and could not come out to bat. The end came fast. Afghanistan lost their last 5 wickets while adding just 14 runs to the scoreboard.
