Manchester United
manager Ruben Amorim addressed a press conference before their upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 20. When asked about whether he might change his 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-3 team formation, to potentially improve results for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim categorically said that he won’t change it and not even the Pope could make him change it.Following a tough 3-0 defeat against arch-rivals Manchester City away at the Etihad Stadium, Ruben Amorim has come under serious pressure from the Manchester United fans and media, to do something different to get consistent results. During the press conference, when Amorim was asked about the visit from minority shareholder of Manchester United,
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, at Carrington, he sarcastically remarked, “He was offering me a new contract” before laughing.
No, no, no. No one. Not even the Pope will change...: Ruben Amorim
There were some rumours about the future of Amorim at Manchester United getting decided in the wake of Ratcliffe’s sudden visit to the training facility, but the club officials said that it was a “pre-planned” meeting rather than an emergency once. Prior to the defeat against Manchester City, the Red Devils got knocked out of the League Cup in the second round with a loss against fourth tier opposition Grimsby Town last month.
The question around the change of formation was put up by a media personal to Ruben Amorim in regards to whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe had suggested it to him in the wake of some tough results at the start of the 2024-25 season, beginning with a home loss to Arsenal in the Premier League. His response read, as per BBC Sport, “No, no, no. No one. Not even the Pope will change.... This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that.”
Although Ruben Amorim has faced a lot of criticism for playing Bruno Fernandes in the centre midfield - which limits the ability of the Manchester United captain to be more involved in attack - the Manchester United manager believes he can be more effective there.
