India started off the lawn bowls tournament in fine fashion with Putul Sonowal creating one of the most stunning upsets on day one when he beat defending men's singles champion Ryan Bester from Canada. Making his Commonwealth Games debut at 43 years old, the defending Asian champion took the lead in the first set before Bester fought back in the second. Sonowal managed to hold on through the tiebreak to win the game in an exciting debut in Section D. His next opponent is Cecil Alexander from the Falkland Islands.
There was also good news for India in the women's pairs event with Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey, who were a part of India's historic Birmingham 2022 gold-winning women's fours team, winning against Connie Rixon and Rebecca Rixon of Malta. Pinki and Rupa Rani easily won the first set before Malta forced a tiebreak after winning the second.
Pinki scored the winning bowl in the tiebreak and thus won the game for India, which gave India two victories on the opening day of the tournament. This placed India second in the group table behind England, and their next opponents are South Africa in the sectional game.
