After a dominant show against the Australian team down under, the Indian cricket team is hosting South Africa in a multi-format series, comprising of two Tests, three ODIs and as many as five T20Is. The
tour began with the first Test, currently being played at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. For the unversed, Protean skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision did not prove crucial as the visitors were bundled out at the score of 159 in 55 overs. The Men in Blue then came out to bat, putting 189 runs on the board, posting 30 runs lead on Day 2. However, the Indian bowlers then came out strongly as they ended the day picking seven wickets with South Africa reeling at 93/7. The day also saw the Indian camp struggle with an injury to their skipper Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill to miss remainder of first Test in Kolkata; Rishabh Pant to lead
The Indian skipper only played three deliveries and was forced to walk off the field with a neck spasm. Later on, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed of Gill’s injury while adding that his participation will be decided later on. However, just at the start of Day 3’s play, the BCCI confirmed that Shubman Gill has been admitted in a hospital and is under examination, ruling him out of the remainder of Test.
“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” BCCI captioned a post on X.
